Building Energy Codes and Beyond:
Paving the Way for Greater
Efficiency Gains
Energy codes are one of the most
cost-effective ways to achieve
significant gains in building
efficiency. At the
International Codes Council’s Final
Action Hearings held in October
2010, state and local government
participation helped usher in a new
model energy code that increases
energy efficiency by 30% over the
2006 International Energy
Conservation Code (IECC).
Based on calculations by the
Alliance to Save Energy, if all
states adopted the 2012 IECC and
achieved full compliance by 2013,
the U.S. would save more than 3.5
quadrillion Btu of annual source
energy by 2030 and $40 billion
in annual energy cost savings.
Looking ahead into the future, NASEO
is committed to working with State
Energy Offices to provide and direct
them with the tools and resources they
need to adopt new model energy codes and
improve compliance and enforcement.
NASEO has held a number of codes
webinars and workshops in the past for
its members and will continue to expand
its efforts and support to State Energy
Offices in this area. Please join
us for our regular
NASEO Buildings Committee calls to
stay up to date on these activities.
