Energy Data and Security Committee

Chair: Jeff Pillon, MI
Vice Chair:  Cyrus Bhedwar, GA

The Energy Data and Security Committee summarizes U.S. Energy Information Administration data, develops positions for NASEO board consideration, and educates state and local leaders on their governments’ role in preparing for and responding to energy supply disruptions. The committee is also responsible for petroleum issues, such as the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The committee meets during the Annual Meeting and the Energy Outlook Conference and before the Winter Fuels Outlook and the State Heating Oil and Propane Program Conferences.

The Energy Data Working Group (a subset of the committee) will examine the wide range of energy data issues of concern to State Energy Offices and that have been raised with Energy Information Administration (EIA) in the past and include providing input to EIA on the State Energy Profiles, budgetary issues, EIA products, surveys, data collection forms, website development and all other matters relevant to state energy data. It will also develop recommendations for the NASEO Board of Directors to consider, and work with EIA to implement the recommendations. The Working Group will also serve as a peer-to-peer assistance forum in which states can share information and questions about working with EIA data and information and other energy related data.

  • U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration and Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability
The committee works closely with the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Find all EIA-related information, including EIA data, budgets, and correspondence, as well as EIA’s Monthly Energy Review, Weekly Crude Oil and Gasoline Spot Prices, and Residential Heating Prices here. The committee is also involved with the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE), concerned with improving the reliability and security of critical energy infrastructure in America.
  • Energy Emergency
The ongoing threat of terrorist activity within our nation's borders, our aging energy infrastructure, and the potential economic loss associated with intentional or unintentional energy outages and natural disasters have highlighted the need for NASEO to keep members informed of all energy emergency information.
  • Disaster Recovery and Building Reconstruction
The U.S DOE's Building Technologies Program (BTP) have developed a disaster recovery and building reconstruction web site in the wake of the Gulf Coast hurricanes last fall. The site contains a wide variety of nation, regional and local resources for state and local officials, builders, and consumers, as well as information on available training and workshops. There is a specific state and local section of this site which can be accessed directly by clicking on the above link.
