Energy Assurance

Archive of Energy Emergency Press Releases and Executive Orders

Over the years communities, States and the Nation have experienced a number of energy emergencies.  Some of the more notable events over the years have included:

  • The 1973/1974 Arab Oil Embargo
  • The Natural Gas Shortages in 1977/78
  • The 1979 Petroleum Shortages following the Iranian Revolution
  • The 1989 Winter Heating Fuel Shortage in the Midwest and Northeast
  • The oil price spike leading up to the 1991 Gulf War
  • The panic gasoline buying following 9/11
  • The Northeast/Midwest Power Outage on August 14, 2003
  • The power outages and fuel shortage following Hurricane Katrina in September 2005
  • The Southeast Petroleum Shortage in 2008 following Hurricane Gustav and Ike
  • The power outages that resulted from the 2011 Groundhog Day Blizzard

In any serious event, States will need to respond to the media.  Following is the beginning of a collection of Press Release and Executive Order used to respond to Energy Emergencies or the threat of a pending emergency.  They may be useful in developing a response if you have not already done so. State are encouraged to submit any Executive Order or Press release that may have been used along with a brief description of the event that trigger that response.  Please send your samples to jpillon@naseo.org
