The Energy Challenges Facing Congress in the Year Ahead

From electric reliability to clean energy in the agricultural sector to school efficiency programs, Senate and House committee staff grapple with a slate of energy challenges on a daily basis. This exchange session reveals some of the complexities of the ongoing energy debate in Washington.

The U.S. Department of Energy, federal authorities, states, and industry are working at a fast pace to address the security of the nation's critical energy infrastructure. This session includes a look at our energy emergency capabilities; an analysis of critical energy infrastructure; and the outlook for the roles of industry, the states, and the federal government in safeguarding the nation's energy delivery system.

State Leadership in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

There is a perception among many that states are not adequately addressing the issues of greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. In partnership with the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, NASEO has collected an array of emission-reduction success stories and case studies from such sectors as forestry, transportation, power, and buildings. This session delivers program development and implementation know-how directly from program operators who contributed to this important Pew-NASEO effort.

Advertising for Efficiency—Collaboration With the Ad Council

Since 1942, the Ad Council has worked to stimulate action on select public issues and produced communications programs to make a difference in our society. Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency: Expanding Information Resources

Coalbed Methane: New Trends and Opportunities

In addition to being an increasingly important source of clean fuel, coalbed methane is being used in an innovative project developed by the Wyoming Energy Office and Roughrider Power. The session includes both a brief presentation about coalbed methane project, and an exciting video about its development in Wyoming's Powder River Basin.

Natural Gas Supply and Use Outlook

As a result of electric reliability concerns over the past several years, a number of states have implemented Demand Response programs and actively promoted distributed generation (DG) as a means to reduce load in critical areas. What is demand response, and how is it different from load management? How did these programs perform last summer? What's on the horizon for clean DG? Do new state standards match existing technologies? This session includes views from a state program operator and DG experts.

This facilitated discussion includes such topics as reviewing research, development, demonstration, and deployment priorities; expanding state-federal-private partnerships; and communicating the success of efforts to date.

Truck Stop Electrification
(10:45 - 11:15 am)
New York has demonstrated the first 44 truck stop electrification units, which provide long-haul truckers with access to easy-to-use, stand-alone electrical power hookups during layovers, significantly reducing noise and fuel emissions from idling engines while conserving hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel each year. This session will describe progress-to-date and potential for truck stop electrification across the country.

Combined Heat and Power A Federal/State Cooperative
