Oil Prices have Heightened Interest in Agriculture's Role in the Nation's Energy Strategies

Posted: October 27, 2004

In June 2004, Farm Foundation and USDA's Office of Energy Policy and New Uses presented the conference, Agriculture as a Producer and Consumer of Energy. It was designed to:

  • Provide baseline material on energy use by agriculture for USDA staff responses to questions about economic impacts of energy price or supply "shocks";
  • Provide comprehensive baseline information about agriculture as a producer of energy;
  • Provide USDA with information to improve administration of energy-related programs; and
  • Develop an agenda for future research for agricultural energy consumption and production, including barriers to technological advances, investment opportunities and economic or price relationships.

The executive summary for this meeting highlights the findings of the conference's four commissioned papers, itemizes the research presented at the conference, documents conference discussions and articulates future research needs identified by conference participants. This summary and abstracts of conference presentations can be accessed by clicking here, or by visiting the Farm Foundation web site at www.farmfoundation.org

A book on the conference is scheduled for publication in January 2005. For more information about the conference, or ordering the book, contact Steve Halbrook, Vice President, Farm Foundation, (630) 571-9393, or e-mail, steve@farmfoundation.org.
