NASEO Expands Collaboration with EPA and DOE on Benchmarking and Voluntary Building Performance Standards

The National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are collaborating to enable appropriate access to energy data needed for voluntary building energy benchmarking and building energy performance standards. NASEO’s work is focused on supporting State Energy Offices’ efforts to facilitate appropriate access to energy-use data from multi-tenant buildings, schools, and public facilities. Making this data available for use in voluntary benchmarking and building performance standards will encourage improved building energy management, assist building owners and tenants in reducing energy costs, and support state efforts to improve energy affordability while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that residential and commercial buildings are responsible for 40 percent of end-use energy consumption in the United States.1  For additional information about this initiative, please contact Ed Carley, Senior Program Director (ecarley@naseo.org).
