In February 2025, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Energy Programs Office released a study prepared by the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) on Safeguarding Pennsylvania: Resilient Microgrids in Our Communities. The goal of the study was to provide the state with information on potential areas to site microgrids to increase resilience, look at natural hazard risks to critical infrastructure and local communities, assess available data on microgrid suitability and economic potential, and explore different state and federal funding opportunities. As a result, the report identified over 23,000 potential locations for microgrids across Pennsylvania that provide critical services such as grocery stores, water and wastewater treatment plants, healthcare facilities, fire stations, and hospitals. A microgrid deployment action plan was included that identified next steps such as using geospatial data, maps, and scoring criteria to guide infrastructure planning and decision making; convening stakeholder meetings; working with other state agencies, local governments, utilities, and community organizations to integrate the study’s insights into broader resilience planning efforts; designing tailored microgrid solutions that meet resilience, cost, and sustainability goals; applying for grant funding; and more.
