The Washington State Department of Commerce has announced the official launch of the Building Efficiency and Clean Operations Network (BEACON) Project. The BEACON Project, developed and implemented in partnership with the Smart Buildings Center Education Program, Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI), and San Timoteo Energy Associates, has hired 10 fellows to support building owners with the Clean Buildings Performance Standard compliance requirements, the statewide Building Performance Standard (BPS). The first compliance deadline under the Clean Buildings Performance Standard is June 1, 2026.

This first cohort of BEACON fellows started on June 2, 2025, embedded in communities throughout Washington state. Fellows are currently receiving training to provide education and free technical assistance to building owners, with the goal of serving those located in under-resourced communities. Fellows will also receive mentorship and professional development opportunities throughout their 10-month fellowship to help support fellows’ career goals and build a clean buildings workforce in Washington.

The fellows will be ready to provide support and services to building owners starting August 2025. To learn more about the BEACON Project, visit the project webpage.

The BEACON Project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
