The Colorado Energy Office has awarded $16 million of its $51.7 million Local Implementation, Mitigation, and Policy Action (Local IMPACT) Accelerator funding to support jurisdictions in the adoption or implementation of either a building energy code or a Building Performance Standard (BPS) that is more stringent than the state minimum.
For jurisdictions using IMPACT funding for code adoption, the code must exceed the statewide minimum Colorado Model Low Energy and Carbon Code (MLECC) in terms of energy savings and/or emissions reductions. Similarly, any jurisdiction that is using the funding to adopt a BPS policy must adopt a BPS that either applies to buildings smaller than 50,000 square feet (Colorado's statewide BPS applies to 50,000 square feet and larger), or requires more significant energy savings or emissions targets than the state BPS.
Funding for Colorado's Local Accelerator program comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program. The Accelerator is maximizing emissions reductions by promoting policies that extend beyond state requirements in four categories: Buildings, Land Use, Transportation, and Waste.
